Learning to Read Music 🎶at Home
The Beginning: 🎷
Everything
has a beginning. It’s not fair to buy a musical instrument and leave it in your
house for long time without playing it. In order to play a musical instrument, I
will suggest you learn how to read music.
Since
my student life in UK, I wanted learning to play a music instrument. I bought
quite a few musical instruments while I was studying. However, I ended up with
Piano (Keyboard) despite the price of this music instrument much higher than
that of other musical instruments.
However,
since we had been keep moving from one place to another, I did not have proper
chance to play this instrument. The Yamaha Keyboard was boxed and stored in a
paid storage place in Feltham and Bracknell for long time. After moving to
Reading, Berkshire, we moved all our stuffs into our flat. Even though the
piano is brought to our flat, I did not start learning the instrument until
recently.
Why learning reading Music? 🎶
Before
learning to play the piano, I realised that I need to learn the music symbol and
most importantly how to read all the music notes that are written in the music
book and sheets. Having a good book of music or any other subject will always
help you to learn on that subject from scratch. Thankfully, I bought some books on
music and piano play quite a while ago and initially I have decided to read through those books
and start practicing the basic staff of the piano. As mentioned, before start
learning a musical instrument, it’s good to know how to read music. You also
can learn musical instrument by hearing the tune which I did but got stuck at
some point. In order to play different types of music and playing it nicely,
you must learn how to read music first.
Learning
to read music doesn’t require knowing to play any music instrument rather it will help to play a music instrument in the
long run. This will make your life easier when you will start learning any
music instrument. If you want to play
classical, romantic, pop, jazz or even rock music, its better, you learn how to
read music first. If you like to sing in a choir, this will help you to join in
that music group.
In
this article, it’s not possible to explain in detail of how to learn reading
music. I will just highlight some key points of music reading. I will suggest
you, buy a good music reading books and piano playing books from Amazon,
Waterstones, Blackwell or some other local book shops.
There
are easy and difficult bits of music learning. Many people find the rhythm and
keys are the most difficult bit when learning to read music. You need to learn
about High and low pitch and their duration. As you perhaps know, music is
written down in stave which is a set of five lines. These lines are also called
staff and they can be extended upwards or downwards with ledger lines. In stave
and ledger lines, music is written down to understand the high and low notes. Music
notes are named in first seven alphabetical letters. i.e. A,B,C,D,E,F,G. To
identify all the music notes, these notes are attached with mainly treble and
bass clefs in the stave and ledger lines. There are other clefs but here I have
mentioned only two main clefs.
To
read music, you also need to know about Rhythm and Beat; Tunes, Major &
Minor Scales, Sharps and Flats, Round up Rhythm, Major and Minor Chords etc.
You need to be familiarised with all
music symbols i.e. stave, ledger lines, treble and bass clefs, semibreve,
minim, crotchet, quaver, semiquaver, dotted notes, beamed notes, time
signature, sharp, flat, key signature ties and slurs, and so on.
Music Periods:
There
are different periods in music. Among them you will come across main four
periods. They are Baroque (means
bizarre) falls between 1600 to 1750; Classical
music falls roughly between 1750 to 1830, Romantic
music period falls approximately between 1830 to 1900 and Contemporary music is evolving since 20th century till
today.
Baroque
is very formal and complex music. There were quite a few famous Baroque
composers during that period. Among them Antonio Lucio Vivaldi, George Frideric
Handel, Arcangelo Corelli are best known composers.
Classical
music is not romantic rather it’s more balanced. It does try not to express any
emotion. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Franz Joseph Haydn are
well known classical music composer during its period.
Expressing
emotion is the key factor of composing the Romantic music. There were many
famous romantic music composers between 1830 to 1900. Frederic
Chopin, Robert Schumann, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky,
Franz Liszt, Franz Schubert are very well-known composer during Romantic music
period.
I
have briefly highlighted the key points of learning reading music and different
periods of music. Also, mentioned some famous composer’s name of different
music periods. If you learn how to read music, you will be able to play them using
any types of musical instrument as the music language is same for all types of
music.
